Keynote speaker Tim Besley

It is widely agreed that economic development requires supportive government.  But there remains much debate about exactly what that role is and what kind of political change is needed to create it.

In this public lecture, Professor Sir Tim Besley will explore the idea that political change can be thought of as kind of structural transformation in government and in the public sphere more generally.  In doing so it will assess the state of knowledge and critically appraise our understanding of the process of economic development, market failure and government failure. He will also assess whether the incorporation of political economy in mainstream economic thinking has improved our understanding of development policy and its outcomes.

Professor Sir Tim Besley is School Professor of Economics and Political Science and W. Arthur Lewis Professor of Development Economics in the Department of Economics at LSE.  He is also a member of the National Infrastructure Commission and was President of the Royal Economic Society.  He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society and British Academy.  He is also a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Economic Association and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
