What does inclusive participatory research tell us about people with disabilities’ lives?

7 December 2023 12:00–13:30

Institute of Development Studies Room 220 and online on Zoom

Inclusive participatory research can be designed to work respectfully and effectively with people with disabilities with a wide range of impairments and support needs.

Involving people with lived experiences directly in evidence generation has the potential to produce in depth, meaningful data, which people not involved in working with this group may find enlightening. It may also lead to changes in attitudes and understandings about people with disabilities, their experiences and concerns.

Drawing on our research within the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) funded Disability Inclusive Development (DID) programme, and to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we share reflections on designing and using inclusive participatory research methods in Kenya (on inclusive pre-school education) and Bangladesh (livelihoods and skills development).

Speakers

  • Mary Wickenden, Research Fellow, IDS
  • Brigitte Rohwerder, Portfolio Research Officer, IDS
