Bringing justice to our broken food systems: insights from the Food Equity Centre

International collaborative research group, the Food Equity Centre (FEC), will share insights into inequities in food systems in Brazil, South Africa, the UK and globally, particularly in the context of South Africa’s 2024 elections, climate change, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

From 20 to 21 May 2024, the Food Equity Centre will host its annual meeting in Cape Town, with a public meeting taking place on Tuesday, 21 May 2024, 13:00-16:00 (UK time) / 14:00-17:00 (South Africa time).

Over the course of the afternoon’s public meeting, researchers will address pressing issues such as healthy diets, the normalisation of hunger, livelihoods in food systems and food territories.

Professor Stephen Devereux, co-director of the Centre for Social Protection, IDS (UK); CoE-FS principal investigator; and National Research Foundation South African Research Chair (SARChI) in Social Protection for Food Security (South Africa)

Ayako Ebata, Research Fellow, Health and Nutrition and the Business, Markets and State clusters, IDS (UK)

Gareth Haysom, Urban Food Research Cluster co-lead, African Centre for Cities, University of Cape Town (South Africa)

Jody Harris, co-convenor of the Food Equity Centre, Adjunct Professor at Mahidol University (Thailand) and Global Research Lead for the People Centered Food Systems project at Columbia University (USA)

Claudia Job Schmitt, Assistant Professor of the Graduate Programme of Social Sciences in Agriculture, Development, and Society, Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)
