Finding hope amongst the gridlock

3 July 2024 16:00–17:00

Institute of Development Studies IDS Convening Space

Join us for a special event to celebrate the 90th birthday of Richard Jolly and 100th birthday of Molly Beirne.

As this year’s UNDP Human Development Report explores, the world is in dangerous gridlock resulting from “uneven development progress, intensifying inequality, and escalating political polarization”. Progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals is slow, and the ambition of the Paris Agreement feels like a distant memory.

These are major challenges for the United Nations and for the broader development community to tackle. What can we learn from the history of development about ideas that can still change the world, and which can give us reason for hope?

In this event to mark the 90th birthday of Richard Jolly and 100th birthday of Molly Beirne, we will explore the past – and the future – of sustainable human development.

Richard Jolly is Research Associate at the Institute of Development Studies and former UN Assistant Secretary General. Richard was also the second Director of IDS from 1972 to 1981 and Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF for 13 years, and is renowned as one of the key thinkers in the field of development.

Molly Beirne is the former secretary of Dudley Seers, founding Director of IDS from 1966, and subsequently of Richard Jolly when he took over Directorship in 1972. She is a member of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.
