IDS anticipates the buzz of a brand-new cohort

Published on 16 September 2022

There’s an atmosphere of excited anticipation at IDS, as we prepare to welcome an intake of over 200 new students from around the world to study our master’s degrees in international development.

Throughout the pandemic IDS has sought to deliver excellent teaching whilst also putting in place protocols that keep students and faculty members safe. This has involved a combination of different teaching methods, drawing both from online and face-to-face teaching, and adapting these to meet the different circumstances.  Throughout it all, we sought to have interactive lectures and small group seminars that prioritised discussion and student engagement.  We are looking forward to the 2022/23 academic year, which will see a return to face-to-face, in-classroom teaching.

The coronavirus pandemic has taught us to respond to a rapidly evolving situation, and to that end we will continue to keep it under constant review and take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of the IDS community. For example, we will support the use of masks in classrooms for those who choose, and learners will be encouraged to be cognisant of others’ needs and possible invisible vulnerabilities.

For students about to start at IDS, here are a few words of welcome from our Director of Teaching and Learning, Linda Waldman:

‘If you have enrolled to study with IDS then it’s likely you share our vision of a more equitable and sustainable world, where people everywhere can live their lives free from poverty and injustice. We’re so excited to welcome you onto campus this year, to join our community and hope that this will provide lifelong professional networks and friendships. We look forward to hearing about your experiences in development.  You will hear from those at the cutting edge of their own research programmes and projects. We will all engage in discussion to learn about and from each other and we can’t wait to hear the buzz of excited conversation in our classrooms.’
